Got news on my dog today that I didn’t want to hear.
She’s at the vet for a routine check-up and they have discovered several things. She has a Stage 1 heart murmur and an enlarged heart. And, she has a severe build-up of bacteria on her gums and gum line. This is getting into her bloodstream and making things harder on her heart. She needs a full dental examination and cleaning, which dogs are put under anesthesia for. However, they can’t do the anesthesia if her heart can’t take it. Currently, we are having a heart x-ray done to check its condition and we are having bloodwork done to monitor the level of bacteria.
Ugh. She’s about to turn eleven-years-old, so I was kind of expecting some things to happen. But then again, I thought she was so healthy. She’s very active for her age and is not overweight at all. So, there were no signs of anything wrong. I guess it’s just a blessing that we had her yearly checkup today.
My wife and I adopted her when she was four-years-old in 2012, right after we got married. She was and is our first baby. I’m hoping she does alright with all of this. My wallet sure won’t. Our vet bill is already at $300.00 and they aren’t done yet. I know they aren’t swindling us or making stuff up, because my mother-in-law works there and has for twenty years. She’s the one relaying all the info to me.
So, keep my little dog and my family in your thoughts or prayers or whatever. Thanks!

Such a good dog!
Yeah, oral hygiene is crucial for systemic health. Here’s hoping they can set things right again.

I h ope she feels better soon! We have two dogs that are getting up there and we don’t expect to be with us much longer. I’ve lost three dogs so far, one died naturally, the other two I had to put down. Losing a friend always sucks.

We’re all hoping she’s okay and this is a mere blip and she’ll be right as rain in no time.

I hope your dog is well. You’ll probably have to start brushing your dog’s teeth. My brother has to do that for his beagle to ease the stress on the dogs heart murmur.

I know it’s scary news but it’s actually not that bad. My dog went for her yearly check up and the vet told us it sounded like she had a grade 1-2 murmur. Went in 6 months later for something unrelated and they said she had a 3-4 murmur and I really should get her checked out. Long story short and she’s been on one pill twice a day for the past couple years and is perfectly normal. I only have to make sure she doesn’t exercise too hard and she gets her heart checked a couple times a year.

That’s a good girl right there. My almost 13 year old just had a dental procedure and had to be sedated. She was wonky the rest of the day but is good to go now. Probably the last time we do this though. Your girl has got this.

Pups are family. It’s so tough when you have to hear the news that something is wrong. Keeping y’all in the thoughts. Hope everything goes smoothly. Fortunately, there are some good options for the murmurs I’ve heard.

One of my Chihuahuas was diagnosed with a heart murmur at about 5 years old. Went on to be anesthetized a half dozen times for teeth cleaning (seems like Chihuahuas have bad teeth) before dying just a few months short of 17 years old.
Based on this experience, I’m not particularly alarmed for your dog by what you describe, although your wallet may be at risk. Best wishes for a happy, long pupper life! She looks like a sweetie.

My girlfriend’ s cocker spaniel was diagnosed with terminal congenital heart failure, given a fluid drain surgery, and put on a bunch of pills to help. This was 2 years ago. She’s been off the medicine for a year and has been doing great, “healthier than ever”, as her vet puts it, and she’s around 10 or 11 as well. Don’t worry too much (other than the bill, yikes!), I’m sure your little lady will be fine.
